This year, they get ready to battle in Lubbock, Texas, with both teams simply battling for second tier bowl positioning.<\/p>\n For the visiting Sooners, it has been one of the most disappointing years in recent program history. A season which started with National Championship aspirations has been derailed by injuries, as no fewer than five impact starters are now out for the season with various injuries, including All-American\u2019s Sam Bradford (quarterback) and Jermaine Gresham (tight end). Oklahoma will be led in this one by their defense. Despite injuries, this is still one of the best units in all of college football, as they\u2019re ranked in the top 10 in scoring defense, rushing defense and total defense. Ryan Reynolds, DeMarcus Granger, Austin Box, Dominque Franks and Travis Lewis will all start Saturday, and all have bright NFL futures.<\/p>\n Offensively, things haven\u2019t been nearly as good, as redshirt freshman Landry Jones leads this group at quarterback. While he has played admirably this season, he is simply no Bradford. Jones currently has 22 touchdowns on the year, but has also thrown 12 interceptions as well. His running backs are talented (Chris Brown and DeMarco Murray have combined for over 1000 yards), but will be playing behind a beat up offensive line, with former starters Brody Eldridge and Jarvis Jones done with injury for the season.<\/p>\n For Texas Tech, things haven\u2019t been much better this year than it has been for their opponents Saturday, as they\u2019ve had their own injuries, shuffling three quarterbacks into their high-powered offense. Taylor Potts is expected to start for the Texas Tech Saturday, and he is the signal caller with the most experience. On the season he has thrown for 19 touchdowns and 12 interceptions, playing in an offense that ranks No. 7 in scoring offense (37 points per game) as well as second in college football with 391 yards through the air.<\/p>\n On defense Texas Tech is a middle of the road team, as they are ranked in the middle third of college football in every major category. They have played well of late, as they limited Oklahoma State\u2019s offense to one of its worst performances of the season last week.<\/p>\n While this game doesn\u2019t have nearly as much hype as it did a year ago, these are still two interesting teams, each of which will likely be much better in 2010. Unfortunately there\u2019s still several games to go in 2009.<\/p>\n While Oklahoma\u2019s defense has been excellent all season, their offense simply hasn\u2019t been able to move the ball against even average teams. With the exception of Kansas State a few weeks ago, Oklahoma has not scored more than 20 points against any team with a winning record. Which is especially bizarre considering that Oklahoma put 60 points in five straight games in 2008.<\/p>\n With Potts playing well, and an underrated defense behind him, I expect Texas Tech to keep this one close. Like their opponents, the Red Raiders are just a shell of their team last year, but are still playing for pride, and will do enough to cover this week\u2019s college football point spread.<\/p>\n
