Alabama Crimson Tide bested division rival LSU, 24-15, in a punishing backyard battle in Tuscaloosa, Ala. While several LSU players \u2013 including quarterback Jordan Jefferson \u2013 were unable to go the distance, a stronger and tougher Bama ballclub delivered the goods in a forceful fourth quarter.<\/p>\n

Trailing 15-10 entering the final period, the Tide regrouped with a combination of flinty defense and step-up performances from the skill positions. Bama receiver Julio Jones, lost in the shadows for much of this season, picked the perfect time to re-emerge. \"\"<\/a> The sophomore gathered in a quick hitch pass from quarterback Greg McElroy, faked out a backup LSU cornerback (another casualty of the Tigers\u2019 march to the infirmary), and rolled 73 yards for a go-ahead touchdown that proved to be the winning score. The win clinches the SEC West title for the Tide, who will play for the SEC championship on Dec. 5 against Florida.<\/p>\n

Mississippi State Bulldogs: The Week That Was <\/strong><\/p>\n

It\u2019s been two weeks since coach Dan Mullen\u2019s Bulldogs last played, but their last game offered a template for future success. Mississippi State Bulldogs knocked off Kentucky, 31-24, as Mullen\u2019s men improved to 4-5 on the season. Star running back Anthony Dixon rumbled for 252 yards to set a new single-game school rushing record.<\/p>\n

While Dixon did his thing, other performers did just enough to push the Bulldogs into the winner\u2019s circle. Quarterback Tyson Lee shrugged off two interceptions to throw a game-tying 67-yard touchdown pass to O\u2019Neal Wilder midway through the third quarter. Earlier in the game, backup quarterback Chris Relf briefly replaced Lee, and while the sophomore didn\u2019t throw a pass, he did scamper 53 yards to set up another MSU touchdown. This seven-point triumph in Lexington, Ky., was truly a collaborative effort.<\/p>\n

The Week That Is: <\/strong><\/p>\n

The last time Mississippi State hosted an SEC powerhouse, the Bulldogs put up a brave fight against Florida before falling by a 29-19 score. Mullen knew Florida inside and out, but his team still needed to play with poise and purpose in order to remain competitive against the defending national champions. As Alabama visits Starkville, Miss., for another prime-time showdown in the Magnolia State, the odds are stacked heavily in favor of an Alabama victory, but the chances of a competitive game are actually rather reasonable. The Bama boys are coming off their always-exhausting game against LSU, in a series that has come to be known as the Saban Bowl. The Tide didn\u2019t suffer the injuries LSU did, but the team from Tuscaloosa should be mentally exhausted heading into this contest. Mississippi State, in contrast, is coming off a bye week and has had two weeks to prepare for the SEC West champs. If Alabama quarterback Greg McElroy can throw the ball well and often, this game could get ugly. The smart money says that Greg McElroy isn\u2019t ready to be at his best. Bama wins, but the Bulldogs keep this one fairly close\u2026 enough to cover the number.<\/p>\n
