Two icons of their sports were positively Kanye-esque with their behavior.<\/p>\n
Michael Jordan was, and in many ways still is, the face of basketball. His career was crammed with so many incredible moments, most still available on YouTube, he\u2019ll perhaps, in most peoples eyes, never be supplanted as the greatest to ever play the game.<\/p>\n
Too bad he\u2019s such a Jackass.<\/p>\n
On Friday he was giving a speech at his induction to the NBA Hall of Fame. He had a lot to talk about – his 10 scoring titles, his five MVP’s, those six championships. But that wasn\u2019t what he wanted to use the occasion for.<\/p>\n
He wanted payback. A lot of it.<\/p>\n
First, he blasted his high school coach who had the temerity to cut him as a sophomore. Ironically it was Obama who, just last week in his speech to school kids, sighted the very same incident as a teachable moment on why you never give up.<\/p>\n
Not #23. All he cared about was embarrassing the guy because he\u2019s still pissed off 33 years later.<\/p>\n
Next came his university coach, living legend Dean Smith of UNC, who blew it by leaving out Jordan when he picked the four starters for a cover of Sports Illustrated.<\/p>\n
That happened in 1982.<\/p>\n
Next up was Jerry Krause, the ex-Bulls General Manager, who once said \u201cit\u2019s organizations who win Championships, not individual players.\u201d<\/p>\n
Jordan didn\u2019t like that then and it hasn\u2019t changed. \u201cJerry’s not here. I don’t know who’d invite him. I didn’t. I hope he understands it goes a long way\u2026 He said organizations win championships. I said, ‘I didn’t see organizations playing with the flu in Utah. I didn’t see it playing with a bad ankle.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n
Jordan left the Bulls eleven years ago and their dominance had nothing to do with his amazing coach, nor teammates like Scotty Pippen, nor the Triangle offence…<\/p>\n
It was all about him<\/p>\n He went after Kevin Loughery, his first coach in the NBA for some infraction. Players weren\u2019t exempt. George Gervin, Magic Johnson and Larry Bird received full facials. As did Isaiah Thomas\u2026 okay he had it coming.<\/p>\n But he even went after his own brother.<\/p>\n Finally he did get around to thanking someone – his own kids, telling them \u201cI wouldn’t want to be you guys.\u201d<\/p>\n After Friday, I don\u2019t think too many people who heard him want to \u201cBe like Mike\u201d anymore either.<\/p>\n Of course, this isn\u2019t just a guy thing.<\/p>\n Serena Williams is probably the only female athlete who is as competitive as MJ. As dominant as any other woman player in the Open Era, when she chooses to play, which isn\u2019t all that often, she\u2019s almost unbeatable.<\/p>\n Yet she was beaten on Sunday, not by her opponent, but by her own mouth.<\/p>\n At the U.S. Open at the end of her semifinal match against Kim Clijsters, she was called for a foot-fault on second serve at love-30. There is no doubt the call was ridiculous, but Serena completely lost it in front of a packed house and on live TV, disgorging a string of swearing that would have made Ilie Nastase faint.<\/p>\n A wee bit unhinged throughout, she\u2019d already been penalized once for racquet abuse, she was disqualified and later fined.<\/p>\n She\u2019s since apologized twice but would you have ever thought that the most foul mouthed tennis player in the sport\u2019s centuries long history wouldn\u2019t be named McEnroe or Connors \u2013 but Serena?<\/p>\n This kind of ridiculous behavior isn\u2019t just limited to the entertainment industry as Obama himself has his own issues with this kind of uncivility.
