I also told pro football bettors that Detroit head coach Jim Schwartz made a mistake by naming rookie signal-caller Matthew Stafford as the team’s starter despite the fact that the team had so many holes at other positions.

Now, heading into Week 2, the Saints will have a much tougher way to go against the stingy Philadelphia Eagles. Philly could be in trouble though, with mediocre backup Kevin Cobb likely replacing injured starter Donovan McNabb while the Lions will take another loss to Minnesota in Week 2.

Jets 24 Texans 7

I knew the Jets would cover the spread in this contest and that they have a special young quarterback in Mark Sanchez, now everyone else knows. While I expected new head coach Rex Ryan to build New York into a feared defensive unit at some point, I have to admit that I didn’t think it would happen so soon. Maybe it’s me, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see the J-E-T-S cover against the Patriots next week. The Texans will take another loss in Week 2 to the ticked-off Tennessee Titans.

Ravens 38 Chiefs 24

This game turned out exactly like I expected, although I didn’t think the Chiefs would score nearly as many points as they did. Looks like Kansas City will have an excellent shot at beating Oakland next week while Baltimore will likely be in a knock-down, drag-out affair with San Diego.

Broncos 12 Bengals 7

I picked the Broncos to cover the spread and they did, but I’ve gotta admit that Denver didn’t look very good in their ‘luck’ win. The Bengals also didn’t look very good in this game despite having quarterback Carson Palmer back under center. The Bengals will undoubtedly lose to Green Bay next week while Denver will have a tough home game against Cleveland that they could lose.

Steelers 13 Titans 10

The Tennessee Titans are going to spank division rival Houston next weekend while Pittsburgh handles the Bears in Chicago.

Falcons 19 Dolphins 7

Jeez, Miami looked pretty bad in letting me down in this one. Atlanta head coach Mike Smith, the former Jaguars defensive coordinator, looks like he’s had a big hand in improving his team’s defense.

Giants 23 Redskins 17

A close NFC East contest is what I expected and that’s exactly what happened, even though New York narrowly missed covering the 6.5-point spread for me. The G-Men will be involved in another toughie on the road against Dallas. I like them to win while Washington enjoys a cakewalk win over the Rams.

Cowboys 34 Buccaneers 21

I said Tony Romo and Co. would ‘handle their business’ in this matchup and they did in a contest that was never in doubt. Beating the Giants next week will prove to be a lot tougher while Tampa Bay could go down again in their road matchup against Buffalo.

Packers 21 Bears 15

Aaron Rodgers is blossoming into an All-Pro type of quarterback if you ask me while Chicago’s offense looked mostly inept in this contest despite the addition of strong-armed quarterback Jay Cutler. Green Bay cruises over Cincy next week while the Bears take a home loss to Pittsburgh.

Vikings 34 Browns 20

Minnesota will be tough to beat this season if Brett Favre avoids the costly three-interception game while I expect the Browns to improve as time goes along. Minnesota handles Detroit easily next week while Cleveland could knock off Denver despite being on the road.

Colts 14 Jaguars 12

I told NFL bettors that this game ‘may be a bit ugly’ but jeez, I didn’t know it would be this ugly. Jacksonville may not have enough offense to beat Arizona at home next week, though their defense looked very strong on Sunday against the Colts. Indianapolis could be in a bit of trouble against an angry Dolphins team next week.

Eagles 38 Panthers 10

Despite their overwhelming win over the Panthers, Philly will be in an uphill battle against the high-powered Saints while Carolina takes another loss to the vastly-improved Falcons.

Seahawks 28 Rams 0

I wrote ‘Go ahead and call me crazy’ as I foolishly thought the Rams would cover the spread and I’ve been kicking myself since half-time of this contest. No way does St. Louis beat Washington next week while Seattle engages in a thriller against division rival San Francisco.

Niners 20 Cardinals 16

This is another one of the games I am totally furious with myself about as I suspected Frisco would cover the spread here. Both teams have ‘winnable’ games next Sunday with the Niners hosting Seattle and Arizona on the road to face the offensively-challenged Jaguars.

The NFL odds are up on which teams will win the NFL in the 2009-2010 season!
