2008 Record: 12-4 NFL football bettors, meet the your NFC favorite: the New York Giants.<\/p>\n On paper they might be the pick, but they will be far from it when the games are played out on grass.<\/p>\n The Giants have a good roster but their recent losses can\u2019t be underrated. On defense, many people forget how inept the Giants were before the arrival of coordinator Steve Spagnuolo and now that he\u2019s gone, they won\u2019t necessarily be as good \u2013 even if they have added good parts. There\u2019s no question that they have the best defensive line in football. Osi Umenyiora is back after a season-long injury, Justin Tuck and Mathias Kiwanuka are among the best young ends in the league while Chris Canty is an excellent free agent addition.<\/p>\n Outside of cornerback, there isn\u2019t much to nitpick with this defense but the loss of Spagnuolo is one that can\u2019t be underrated. Just take a look at the Jacksonville Jaguars defense last year after Mike Smith left to coach Atlanta.<\/p>\n On offense, the Giants bread and butter will be their ground game but one has to wonder if that will be enough. This is a team that faded down the stretch without Plaxico Burress, losing three of their last four games, and when you add up all of their offensive losses over the last few years, one has to assume that they simply won\u2019t be as effective.<\/p>\n Including Jeremy Shockey, the Giants have now subtracted him, Burress and Amani Toomer from their offense and haven\u2019t injected any replacements that are of the same caliber. Shockey was inconsistent, Burress was an off-the-field nightmare and Toomer has grayed, and while cutting ties with these players is one thing, not replacing them is another.<\/p>\n Steve Smith and Domenik Hixon, the two starting wideouts this year, are good possession but not much more. Hakeem Nicks is a rookie and Sinorice Moss hasn\u2019t developed. At tight end, Kevin Boss isn\u2019t much more than a plugger.<\/p>\n The lines of scrimmages are very strong on this team but with Spagnuolo gone on defense and the offense lacking receiving threats, the Giants can\u2019t be considered a Super Bowl threat any longer. And in the AFC East, a slight deterioration could land them at the back of the pack.<\/p>\n The mood this year is completely different.
