2008 Record: 8-8 From the firing of Mike Shanahan to the trading of Pro Bowl quarterback Jay Cutler, the Denver Broncos have had a tumultuous offseason. In an era where new head coaches already experience shortened honeymoon periods with their new teams, it\u2019s safe to say that Josh McDaniels better produce results very early in his career as a head coach.<\/p>\n The Broncos still have a lot of good parts on offense aside from a quarterback and we\u2019ll see how much of an offensive guru McDaniels really is. Kyle Orton and Chris Simms will compete for the starting job but if neither is anymore competent than they\u2019ve proven to be, the Broncos top-notch offensive line, solid running game and talented receiving weapons will go to waste.<\/p>\n One major concern has to be the running game. While most of the parts carry over from last year, there has to be some concern about how good the running game can be without Mike Shanahan. During his tenure, the Broncos were a 1000-yard back factory. They probably won\u2019t have any issues this year but don\u2019t be surprised if their ground game slowly deteriorates over a couple of seasons.<\/p>\n On defense, the Broncos are an absolute mess. Not only did they have a horrible unit last year, they are switching to the 3-4 scheme, which means there will be plenty of growing pains this year.<\/p>\n There is no competent nose tackle on the roster and as a whole, the defensive line is a huge weakness. Good luck running a 3-4 defense without a good line.<\/p>\n On top of that, a lot of high draft picks will be assigned to new roles. Jarvis Moss is now an outside linebacker, as is Tim Crowder and Elvis Dumervil while D.J. Williams is now an inside linebacker in a different scheme.<\/p>\n Brian Dawkins was added to the secondary but picking up defensive parts from the Philadelphia Eagles is like picking up pitchers from the Atlanta Braves \u2013 buyer beware. See: Hugh Douglas, Bobby Taylor, Troy Vincent, Michael Lewis, Jeremiah Trotter.<\/p>\n On the whole, the Broncos have turned over quite a bit of their roster, so wins won\u2019t be expected early. The real test will be to see if the team still has faith in McDaniels when the losses come.
