The surprising D-Backs are actually in the race, maybe, but like many teams they have been having trouble solving the Cards.

There are still enough division games left for them to be a factor.<\/p>\n

St. Louis<\/h3>\n

The Cardinals head into Thursday night looking for a sweep of the Diamondbacks. They are on a four game winning streak and have outscored Arizona 17-5 over the first three games. Pretty typical stuff.<\/p>\n

St. Louis continues to dominate even though they have three starting OFers on the disabled list including slugging rookie Randal Grichuk.<\/p>\n

You couldn’t blame this team is they had a slump or even a .500 stretch for 10 games but it seems to never happen. They just keep finding ways to win and their pitching remains fantastic.<\/p>\n

This season Carlos Martinez has more than thrived in a starting role and the team is 18-5 in his starts this season. \u00a0Clearly his power arm plays perfectly fine in the rotation.<\/p>\n

However, I wonder if he might be beginning to tire a little bit as he is pitching more innings in the Majors than ever before. In his last 5 starts he has given up 3 or more ERs 4 times after 0 in the previous five.<\/p>\n

I am not saying that you should fade him the rest of the way but on the road in a hitters park might be the time to take advantage of the value you can get by doing so.<\/p>\n

Eventually something has got to give for this group right. Coasting after winning the first three games of a series when you are in the position the Cards are in would be only natural.<\/p>\n

Arizona Diamondbacks<\/h3>\n

Beating the Cardinals is the most difficult thing to do this season so it is no surprise that Arizona is struggling right now. It is just too bad that they are facing them right now because it just might be the death knell on their season.<\/p>\n

You have to give the D-Backs and A for effort though. They may wind up finishing 10 games under or something but given that they have just one star player and not much else they have hung in there pretty well.<\/p>\n

The question is how do they fill in around the Paul Goldschmidt (great profile in SI recently)<\/p>\n

The lineup is pretty good but the pitching needs a lot of help. \u00a0Thursday starter Rubby De La Rosa, actually leads the eam in wins but a core of him and Chase Anderson is not that frightening.<\/p>\n

It seems like De La Rosa is always flirting with danger because he walks a lot of batters and gives up a lot of home runs, Chase Field is very hitter friendly and that “approach” is not going to work.<\/p>\n

Similar to Martinez he has never pitched so many innings in the Majors before. Though recent results have been promising.<\/p>\n
