Kansas City head into Sunday’s game looking for their second straight home win and a chance to head into its bye week with a comfortable 3-0 record to top the NFC West.

Not bad for a team that is averaging just 254 yards per game — second worst in the NFL.

Meanwhile, San Francisco has let itself get into a must-win situation riding a two-game losing streak, and will want to avoid a second loss to a divisional foe.

The Niners are by far the better team when you compare them side by side to the Chiefs. So what they heck is going on, and how do the beat Kansas City on the road this week?

Well for starters, they must keep the run game clicking. The ground assault seems to be rolling along behind a solid performance from RB Frank Gore who set a team record with his 21st 100-yard rushing game on Monday against the Saints, after tallying just 38 yards in the Niners’ loss to the Seahawks in Week 1.

This will be key against a very good Kansas City rushing defense that has limited its opponents to just 2.7 yards per carry and 63.5 per game.

San Francisco will need to hold onto the ball limiting turnovers and pound the ball up the middle on the ground, making sure to steer clear of All-Pro linebacker Mike Vrabel and his partner Derrick Johnson.

You can expect the Chiefs to do the same, as they hammer the San Francisco front four with the driving force of tandem running backs Jamaal Charles, who is averaging an AFC-best 6.4 yards per carry, and Thomas Jones, the five-time 1,000-yard rusher who gained 83 last week.

With this kind of running talent, I wouldn’t be surprised to see both teams finish with over 100-plus yards rushing.

The Niners’ passing game is a different story. QB Alex Smith has thrown four interceptions to just one TD over the past two weeks, but did have a better outing against the Saints last weekend completing 23 of 32 and even led a game-tying drive, including a two-point conversion to TE Vernon Davis.

He will need to make short ball-control passes to move the football down the field against the Chiefs.

Similarly, KC’s Matt Cassel who has just 26 completions of 50 attempts for 244 yards, one TD and a pair of picks, has been anything but extraordinary. He is completing just 52 percent of his passes through the first two games for 4.9 yards per pass. Rookie tight end Tony Moeaki has been Cassel’s best target thus far, catching eight passes thus far for 79 yards.

Cassel will also need to make short ball-controlled passes if he wants to have any success against a San Francisco defense that is ranked fourth in the league giving up just 264 yards per game.

The Niners lost 41-0 the last time the two met at Arrowhead Stadium in 2006, extending their winless streak at Arrowhead Stadium to three since 1982.

Can the Chiefs really go 3-0 for the first time since 2003? Only if they can keep Gore and Davis in check on Sunday, and I just don’t think they can do it. The streak ends.

Coming into this matchup: San Francisco: 0-2 SU, 1-1 ATS, Kansas City: 2-0 SU, 2-0 ATS
