The Mississippi State Bulldogs take on the Mississippi Rebels in a SEC matchup of two teams looking for their first conference win. Thursday’s game from the Tad Smith Coliseum is set for 9 p.m. and it will be broadcast on ESPN2.
Mississippi State started the season with four straight wins, but has fallen to 8-7 straight-up on the year with five losses in its last seven games. It has been horrible against the spread with an overall record of just 1-10. The Bulldogs opened conference play last Saturday with a 75-57 loss to Alabama as a 4 ½-point home underdog. This followed a 94-72 loss to St. Mary’s as a 14 ½-point underdog in the Shamrock Shootout on Dec. 29.
Senior guard Ravern Johnson leads the team in scoring with 19.2 points per game, while senior forward Kodi Augustus is the leading rebounder with 8.3 per game. The Bulldogs are averaging 68 points and 37 rebounds and shooting 41.1 percent from the floor.
Mississippi opened its conference play with a 77-71 loss to Florida last Saturday as an eight-point road underdog. Prior to that loss, the Rebels had won nine of their last 10 games including a 75-57 win over SMU as a five-point road favorite on Jan. 5. They are currently 12-4 SU and 7-5 ATS.
They are led by senior guard Chris Warren, who is averaging 18.6 points and 4.3 assists per game. Sophomore forward Reginald Buckner is the team’s leading rebounder with 6.9 per game and senior guard Zach Graham is the second leading scorer with 13.9 points. Mississippi is averaging 78 points a game and shooting 47.5 percent from the field. It also has a slight edge in rebounds with 38 per game.
Mississippi State is 4-2 ATS in the last six meetings, but stick with Ole Miss this time around as the Rebels are just the better all-around team.
The Pick: Mississippi -14 1/2
