The Filly and Mare Sprint- Friday November 5th Post Time: 5:30 P.M. (EST)

The Filly and Mare Sprint is a Weight for Age race open to thoroughbred fillies and mares age 3 and up. It is contested on a dirt track at a distance of 7 Furlongs with a total prize purse of $1,000,000. There are four automatic bids awarded from wins in a designated Challenge Race for this division and the rest of the field is determined by total points earned over the course of the racing season. The following is a look at a few of the favorites that are expected to run this race.

Jessica is Back

This horse earned an automatic “Win and You’re In” ticket to the Filly and Mare Sprint with a victory in the grade I $350,000 Princess Rooney Handicap in July of this year. Jockey, Elvis Trujillo was able to keep her within striking distance of the pacesetter Dr. Zic before breaking down the stretch for a two length victory over 2-1 favorite Warbling, who was in the thick of things as well. Last time out, Jessica is Back finished third in the grade I $250,000 Ballerina Stakes at Saratoga in late August.

Informed Decision

Last year’s Filly & Mare Sprint winner at Santa Anita is expected back to defend her title in this year’s race. While she has not earned an automatic berth through a Challenge Cup victory, this Filly has three wins this season with the last one coming in the ungraded $400,000 Presque Isle Downs Master Stakes on September 11. Her last time out she finished third behind 69-1 long shot Old Religion and Dubai Majesty in the grade II $200,000 Thoroughbred Club of America Stakes at Keeneland on October 9. She currently has $442,809 in earnings for 2010 and 18 Breeders’ Cup points.

My Jen

With a “Win and You’re In” victory in the grade II $150,000 Gallant Bloom Handicap on September 25 at Belmont Park, she locked up a spot in the Filly & Mare Sprint. This was only her second start since finishing a disappointing seventh in the Old Hat Stakes in early January. She was able to get by Moontune Missy by a head at the wire to secure the win. Heading into the Gallant Bloom she was coming off a surprising second place finish in the grade III $100,000 Victory Ride Stakes at Saratoga back in August.

Champagne d’Oro

This is another Filly that does not have a Challenge Cup victory that would automatically place her in the field for this race, but an impressive 2010 resume has earned her $479,243 in prize winnings and 30 points in the Breeders’ Cup standings. She has three wins this season including a victory in the grade I $250,000 Test Stakes at Saratoga on August 7. Last time out she finished fourth in the Thoroughbred Club of America Stakes. She did run in last year’s Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies but finished a disappointing 12th.

Predicted winner of the 2010 Filly & Mare Sprint: Champagne d’Oro

Rightly So is very fast and should be the early pacesetter. She is a winner of seven of 11 races, including a four-length victory in her last appearance.
