Mountain West Schools 2010-2011 Football Previews: BYU Cougars

Coach: Bronco Mendenhall
2009 Record: 11-2

BYU Gambling Odds from Sportsbook.com to win BCS: +30000

Brigham Young has been a non-BCS conference big boy for some time now. The Cougars have played in the Las Vegas Bowl for the past five seasons, winning three of them against the likes of Oregon, UCLA and Oregon State. BYU could again have a strong team, though it must deal with some major departures at quarterback and running back.

TCU looks like easily the best team in the conference in 2010, but BYU should be duking it out with Utah for second fiddle in the Mountain West and – who knows? – maybe another Las Vegas Bowl!

Team Strengths:

Offensive tackle Matt Reynolds is quite possibly the best O-lineman in the Mountain West. He joins three other returning starters to represent a cagey veteran unit. The Cougars also have a nice duo at wide receiver in McKay Jacobson and O’Neill Chambers.

The Cougars are getting a bit of a reputation for producing pro prospects in these units (think WR Austin Collie, OLs Travis Bright, Dallas Reynolds, Ray Feinga) and 2010 is no different.

Team Weaknesses:

With RB Harvey Unga’s selection by the Chicago Bears in the NFL’s Supplementary Draft, BYU must fill another major hole, along with prolific veteran QB Max Hall. With Unga gone, the Cougs will likely look to junior J.J. Di Luigi. He’s received bright reviews, but he’s no Unga.

At pivot, BYU should start freshman Jake Heaps, who is one of the top QB prospects this year, but still a first-year collegian.

Filling these vacancies at two key positions could be truly difficult.

2010-2011 BYU Football Prediction: 11-2

The terrible trio of games BYU must contend with this season is Florida State, Utah and TCU, all away from Provo. The Cougars also welcome one of the NCAA’s best QB prospects in Washington’s Jake Locker in the first week of the season.

BYU has talent and Coach Mendenhall is a creative tactician, but the holes to fill and the sked should be overwhelming for a team in the best conference that doesn’t have automatic BCS representation.
