SPURS vs. BLAZERS
Time: Thursday 10:30 ET
Venue: Rose Garden, Portland
Spread: Spurs -2
Over/Under: 194
What to make of the San Antonio Spurs? They seem to alternate between a savvy veteran team making one last run at a title before the warranty runs out on Tim Duncan and a group that is bound and determined to be just another team heading for a first-round playoff upset.
Whatever the case, the group that takes the court late Thursday night in the second game of the TNT doubleheader bears little resemblance to the team that was winning title after title only a few seasons ago. Duncan had one of the great rebounding games (27) of the season last week against the Hawks, but a few nights later looked listless in a loss at Denver. Antonio McDyess, Manu Ginobili and Richard Jefferson are also putting some miles on their tires.
Gregg Popovich is hoping to keep the big guns healthy, make a decent late-season run for playoff position and head into the post-season with a little momentum, take advantage of extra days off during the playoffs and hope for the best when the rubber really hits the road.
The Portland game is the second of a relatively easy 8-game road trip that started Wednesday in Sacramento and finishes after the All-Star break in Detroit on Feb. 21.

THURSDAY NIGHT BEST NBA PARLAY BET:
The Spurs still have cache and great name recognition, but they are no longer a good cover team. They squeaked past Sacramento Wednesday night and will have problems in the Northwest, even against an injury-weakened Trail Blazer bunch.
Even at 9.5, the Cavs should cover against Miami, which played the night before in Boston and by all appearances will have to play better than .500 ball the rest of the season to get into the playoffs. PLay is Portland +2 and Cleveland -9.5.
