We know that Matt Cassel can do more than OK with great receivers and behind a good offensive line. This year we’ll find out how he does working with a mediocre O line and average receivers. Cassel is part of a new world order in KC, with a new GM (Scott Pioli, from New England) and new coach (Todd Haley, from Arizona).
Cassel, who has decent quickness in the pocket but was sacked more than any QB in the league last season while he figured out the pro game, has a solid running back in Larry Johnson but is without All-Pro TE Tony Gonzalez (exported to Atlanta).
The defense follows several other clubs in converting to a 3-4, with underachieving Glen Dorsey in middle and high draft picks Tyson Jackson and Alex Magee on either side. Derrick Jackson is a speed linebacker; his sacks totals should rise in the 3-4. This club is at least trying, although it is a long way from the 9-7 playoff team of only two years ago.
Surprising stat: Larry Johnson averaged 4.5 yards a carry last season behind one of the NFL’s worst offensive lines.
Team strengths: Scott Pioli helped orchestrate New England’s rise to the top of the NFL this decade but never got a lot of credit with Bill Belichick in Foxboro. So far Pioli appears to be pushing the right buttons in western Missouri. Cassel learned from Tom Brady not to get flustered when things go south.
Team Weakness: Where to start? Without Gonzalez, it will be much harder to move the chains and keep the defense rested.
Cassel will be hard-pressed to match the 21 points a game that the Chiefs offense produced after Week 6 last season.

Matt Cassel does not have the supporting cast he had in New England and is in for a rude awakening this season with the Chiefs. The AFC West is a very weak division, but somebody still has to finish last.
